The survey to underpin the work was conducted through Ipsos Mori and involved interviews with some 11,000 people aged over 18, mostly face-to-face, last April.
Of those, more than 7,000 knew of Darwin’s work already.
People were asked which statements were closest to their own opinion about how evolutionary theory should be taught in science lessons in schools.
The highest proportion agreeing that evolutionary theories alone should be taught was in India, at 49%, followed by Spain (42%).
One in five in China and in South Africa thought other perspectives – and not evolutionary theories – should be taught.
Those opting for evolutionary theory “together with other possible perspectives, such as intelligent design and creationism” ranged from 38% in Spain to the 68% in Argentina.
“It is quite an interesting response and we need to think about why that is,” said the head of the Darwin Now programme, Dr Fern Elsdon-Baker.
Her feeling is that the debate about Darwinism has been portrayed as very polarised: science versus religion.
A previous survey suggested a lot of people were open-minded about having a faith and understanding that evolutionary processes occurred, and she thinks the polarisation of the arguments has confused them about how science works as a process.
“The majority of people in each country polled felt it was acceptable to have faith and think evolution happens by means of natural selection,” she said.
So it was necessary to communicate science in a less dogmatic, more sophisticated way, she said.
Darwinism remains controversial.
In March Turkey’s scientific and technological research council pulled a cover article about Darwin from its popular magazine, provoking outrage among scientists.
Dr Elsdon-Baker said: “It would be ridiculous to suggest that there haven’t been problems with the Darwin anniversary – but the British Council project, which is working in 45 countries, has had a very positive response.
“There’s clearly a demand for these kind of science communication activities around Darwin’s theory of evolution by means of natural selection.”

‘Energy junkies’

“The result of this increase in transmission capacity will be to encourage even more giant wind turbines to seek connection to it in order to feed energy junkies down
south.
“We are concerned about the impact of this powerline and its relationship to the government’s energy and environmental policy.
“There is increasing opposition to large-scale, land-based wind farms in Scotland, and with the executive making changes to the funding arrangement to encourage more
marine energy, government policy is beginning to point more in favour of large-scale schemes being located offshore.”
The RAS has urged the executive to hold a public local inquiry to examine the implications of the project.
Mr Young said: “We have submitted an environmental assessment on the project, which is replacing existing pylons.
“The length of transmission line at Cairngorms National Park would also be reduced.”
The Scottish Executive said it had received a planning application for the project and that it could be subject to a public inquiry.

Blog: Park protest

SSE said the upgraded line would ship renewable energy to the south.
The company does not believe that a current 132kV line is sufficient to feed power from the growing number of wind and hydro energy sites in the Highlands and Islands
to the National Grid.
It has proposed an upgraded line with about 600 pylons, some up to 213ft high.
The company said that overall there would be 200 fewer pylons than on the existing transmission line, but that they would be bigger.
The proposals have already been attacked by the Ramblers Association in Scotland, which claimed they would be “disastrous”.
Part of the proposed line will run through the Cairngorms National Park, which is one of the areas where the route has sparked most protest.
Campaign group Cairngorms Revolt Against Pylons called for a local public inquiry following the application.
The group has warned that the move would totally contradict the park’s central aims, as well as undermining Scotland’s reputation for wild landscapes.
Jo Cumming, chair of the campaign group, said: “We are disappointed that SNH has not asked for a strategic environmental assessment which would take into account all
the energy requirements across Scotland, the broad range of renewable energy options and energy conservation.
“What will the Cairngorms National Park and Scotland as a whole look like in five to 10 years’ time?
“If even a few of the proposed plans for wind farms go ahead the CNP and Scotland will be a wirescape.”
However, SNH concluded that many concerns are likely to be addressed through provision of further information or the application of planning conditions.

Francesca now lives in London where she studied at theatre school and has recently finished performing in the West End production of Rent.
She says she lives by cosmic ordering and loves Shepherd’s pie.

She says she is still obsessed and would love to be his assistant for the day.
Gwion will be joined by fellow welsh hopeful Jordan, 13, from Wrexham as they vie with 10 others to become Oliver.
Gwion has aspirations to become director when he is older and his favourite musical is Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.
Jordan is a big fan os Les Miserables and dreams of playing the role of Jean Valjean when he is too old to play Oliver.
Three young boys will also be chosen to play orphaned urchin Oliver.
The 24 hopefuls will face the public vote in a show hosted by Graham Norton on BBC One from next Saturday.

London’s Palladium.
She only recently relinquished the role.

The names of the 12 boys who hope to win the part of Oliver in a West End musical have been released by the BBC.
Nine are from England, while two live in Wales and the other is from Northern Ireland. All are aged from 10 to 13.
They will take part in I’d Do Anything on BBC One from next Saturday, and eventually three of them will be selected for the lead role.
Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber and Sir Cameron Mackintosh are among the judges, and the role of Nancy will also be filled.
A dozen young women, whose ages range from 17 to 28, are competing to be that character.
The boys include Bon Jovi fan Alexander, who is 11 and lives in London.
Ten-year-old Arthur, from Bristol, wants to own a theatre when he is an adult, while Chester, aged 12 and from Middlesex, hopes to become a professional actor.
Football fan Gareth is a 12-year-old from Londonderry, while 11-year-old Gwion, whose home is in Carmarthenshire, wants to be a musical director.
Also on the list are Harry, a rugby fan aged 12 from Oxfordshire, and Jonny, a 13-year-old from Warwickshire whose ambition is to be a marine biologist.
Thirteen-year-old Chelsea supporter Jordan is the second resident of Wales among the dozen, while Joseph, who is 10 and lives in Berkshire, is a keen rugby player.
Another contestant is 13-year-old Kwayedza from Kent, who hopes to be a successful singer-songwriter.
And completing the list are Shrek fan Laurence, who is 11 and lives in Cheshire, and 10-year-old Sam from Hampshire, who loves the Billy Elliot film and stage show.
Oliver! first reached the London stage in 1960 and became a musical movie in 1968, starring Oliver Reed as Bill Sikes. It went on to win five Oscars.
Previous television talent shows have seen Lord Lloyd Webber find a new Maria – Connie Fisher – for a production of The Sound of Music and an actor – Lee Mead – to
play the title role in a new production of the Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat musical

Pylon network inquiry under way

A public inquiry into plans for a 137-mile power line through the Scottish countryside has begun.
Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) said it wants to replace an existing line between Beauly, near Inverness, and Denny, near Stirling.
The inquiry, which began in Perth, follows years of controversy over the proposals for about 600 pylons, which would be up to 65m tall.
SSE said it believed the plans would eventually be approved by ministers.
The power company said the £320m development was needed for the reliable transmission of electricity from renewable sources from the north of Scotland, which would be enough to power one million homes.
However, the proposals, which would see pylons erected in some of Scotland’s most picturesque locations, including the Cairngorms National Park and the Southern Highlands, have attracted fierce opposition since being announced in 2005.
More than 17,000 objections have been received by the Scottish Executive so far, including concerns raised by local authorities through which the power line would pass, as well as conservation body Scottish Natural Heritage.
Residents have also formed opposition groups, including Highlands Before Pylons and Pylon Pressure, raising concerns about threats to tourism, house prices and health.
The 11-month inquiry, set to be the longest of its kind in Scotland since devolution, will hear evidence from a long list of witnesses and sit in Inverness, Newtonmore and Stirling.
SSE has already ruled out an argument for putting the line underground on cost grounds.
The company’s chief operating officer, Colin Hood, said: “We believe that our proposals, which reflect five years of environmental and technical studies and public consultations, are strongly founded and will eventually receive the go-ahead.
“It is vital that they do, because the country’s goals for greener and more indigenous sources of energy depend on it.”
Opening the inquiry’s first session, principal reporter Timothy Brian said the proceedings were unusually long and complex.
“The aim is to give everyone a fair hearing and provide the reporters with all the information necessary,” he said.
The inquiry reports will eventually be submitted to Scottish ministers for a final decision.

They also said that the council had yet to receive additional information on an application for a sub-station near the listed Torwood Mire wildlife site, meaning councillors would not be able to reach a determination on it.
Perth and Kinross, Highland and Stirling councils have objected to the power line, but SSE said the development was needed in order to transfer green energy from proposed projects in the north of Scotland.
It would run from Beauly near Inverness to Denny near Falkirk, passing through the Cairngorm National Park and close to the Wallace Monument in Stirling.
The public inquiry into the power line, due to be held in 2007, has received thousands of objections.
Falkirk Council has decided not to drop its objection to a line of huge electricity pylons running from the Highlands to Central Scotland.
The line, proposed by Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE), would see 600 pylons built on a 137-mile route.
The unexpected decision was made by councillors against the recommendation of local authority officials.
The council also decided to make a written submission to a forthcoming public inquiry on the proposals.
Falkirk Council’s regulatory committee decided to keep in place a “holding objection” to the planned power line.
Officials had recommended it should be withdrawn, after pointing out that only a small part of the line would come into the authority’s area, having a minor effect.
